Malaiyur Mambattiyan

here was a time when actor Prashanth was amongt the top three heroes in Tamil cinema, the other two being Ajith and Vijay. Today, as Ultimate Star Ajith and Ilayathalapathy Vijay are raking in the moolah and basking in glory, Top Star Prashanth is on the sidelines. How could he let his soaring career spiral down? But we have to appreciate that he keeps trying to get back into the race for the top spot with action flicks from time to time.

His next movie is Malaiyur Mambattiyan, remake yesteryear hit with the same title and with Prashanth’s father Thiyagarajan in the lead. The movie was a smash hit, and Thiyagarajan hopes to remake the success! “We have used the best technology available to shoot the action scenes and they have come out remarkably. Some of the best scenes include one in which Prashanth jumps from one mountain to another and running over a falling bridge. An amazing police chase has also been included. We have used a lot of special effects in the film,” he said.

Viththagan

After ‘Pachai Kudhirai’, Parthiban is back as what he is best: direction! The project that he will embark on soon, has been titled ‘Viththagan’ and will be produced by Manickam Narayanan, Seventh Channel.

What Trisha could not, Anushka does

Films dubbed from Telugu to Tamil have been doing well in the past, but during the last decade or so, no Telugu movie, in its dubbed version, could rake up the collections at the box office. Even Telugu films in which Trisha stars were failures; for example, Nandu and Kumaran, both dubbed Tamil versions.

The glory of the past has now returned with Arundhathee. The film, which has Anushka in the title role, has been released in all the big screens across Tamil Nadu and the industry sources say that it is garnering the collections like the good old days. Arundhathee, incidentally, is a supernatural thriller set in the rural background.

All actors back the producers

With the Producers’ Body in Bollywood deciding stop the release of new films in multiplexes from April 3 onwards, the actors have also pledged their allegiance to the producers. Top stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and the likes have sent a letter to the producers’ body that they will support them and not the multiplex owners in this issue.

It is worth mentioning here that it is not a surprise considering the fact that most of the actors have their own production houses. The rift between the producers and the multiplex owners is stemmed from the profit sharing issues.

Videsh Got A Certificate

Bollywood flick Videsh, which will hit the marquee on March 27th, has got an A certificate. Videsh, incidentally, has Preity Zinta in the lead and is directed by Deepa Mehta. According to Sanjay Bhutiani, the CEO of BR Films, the censor board decided to give an A certificate because of the few scenes that were considered to be brutal and hence not appropriate for children. Bhutiani said that the essence of Videsh would be lost if the scenes were chopped off.

The story of Videsh is of a young woman married to an NRI whom she has never met and the torture that she is subjected to in her marital home.

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’s latest problem

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu directed by debutant Susindran has received good response from the public and the press for its novel way of presentation and content. The film had Kishore as the Kabadi coach for a bunch of youngsters. Now a Kannada film director Narendra Babu has accused Kishore that he has plagiarized the content of his film Kabadi in VKK. While talking on this issue Narendra Babu states, “My film Kabadi started two years back for which Kishore is the producer.

He is also doing the role of a Kabadi coach in the film which is very similar to the one in VKK. When I saw VKK, I was shocked to find the same sequences as that in Kabadi. I am very sure Kishore must have conveyed the story to Susindran.”

Responding to this Kishore said, “It is true that Kabadi began before VKK. But I never shared about its story or anything with VKK crew. How will I do that when I happen to be the producer of Kabadi? If Narendra Babu insists, I am willing to withdraw from the film”. He also added that Narendra Babu should prove himself on his own merit instead of blaming others.

Jai Ho song is common for everyone

song Jai Ho which fetched the Oscar Award for A R Rahaman is being used for election campaigning. The Congress party has bought this song for a heavy price and the song is played in the election campaigning meetings. BJP and other parties are raising objections for playing this song. They are criticizing by saying that the film Slumdog Millionaire got the Oscar Award because of Congress. They are the root cause for the people to stay in the slums even after India attaining Independence.

When asked A R Rahaman about his opinion about using the song Jai Ho for election propaganda, he said,” Jai Ho song is not a sole propriety. It is common for everyone. This song is played everywhere. The song is used in fashion shows. Even this song is used in some of the functions in Singapore. It is also good and happy thing that this song is used for election campaigning. I do not belong to any political parties. I have not given support to nay party. I have faith on the voters who will elect the efficient contestant.” Vairamuthu is penning a lyric for a new Tamil Anthem for Tamilians living abroad. A R Rahaman is now busy composing the music for this anthem.

Arya, a Telugu villain now

Actor Arya is definitely going places after the release of his ‘Naan Kadavul’. The actor’s recent release directed by Bala, which was dubbed and released in Telugu as Neni Devudni, has won him both rave reviews and more movie offers.

And Arya has just signed up for a Telugu flick. The film, which features Allu Arjun, as the hero, will cast Arya in a different role as a villain.
Such roles with negative shades are not new to the actor, who has done characters like that in ‘Pattiyal’ and ‘Arindhum Ariyamalum’. He, however, will be launched as a full fledged villain, in this Telugu film, to be directed by Gunasekar.
‘Pre Production work for this yet-to-be-named film has been on for eight months. The villain’s character, which Arya has agreed to play, is clearly on par with that of the hero himself,’ vows director Gunasekar.

Endhiran Story

Ever since 'Endhiran, the Robot', Shankar's magnum opus starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was announced, speculations have been rife as to the plot of the movie. As usual, Shankar kept everything about the film secret.

Anyway, our source close to the 'Endhiran' team, finally succeeded in getting the storyline for us.

"In the film set in 2020 AD, Rajnikanth plays two roles- a scientist and 'Endhiran', a robot he creates. The world turns topsy turvy for the scientist when the robot shrugs off the control of his creator and acts on his own. The hero tries his best to bring back the 'disobedient' robot. But, to his horror, the scientist finds that Endhiran is in love with his lover (Aishwarya Rai)! There begins a thrilling chase...," our source told us.

Shooting for the big budget film is fast progressing in Tamil Nadu. The film is being produced by Sun Pictures. Oscar winner AR Rahman scores the music.

Suriya’s audacious efforts for ‘Ayan’

For continuing his six pack saga, Suriya will be back to the screens to flaunt his toned abs and mesmerizing acting in Sun Pictures’ ‘Ayan’. ‘Kallori’ girl Tamannah after sharing screen space with Dhanush in the super hit ‘Padikkadhavan’, pairs up with Suriya.

Produced by AVM Productions, the latest trailer of the film featured a handsome Suriya walking the deserts and fighting the baddies audaciously in stunt scenes. The Hollywood style of swinging down the bar and lifting the heavy barrel to knock out the henchmen looked awesome in the promo. But, very few knew that Suriya had a torn muscle while trying to support the weight of the iron rod.

Albeit the painful injury, the actor continued with the scene that was shot extensively for seven days under the direction of stunt master Kanal Kannan. With just the basic first aid, Suriya did the sequence despite repetitive advice from the crew to pack up and continue later.

This is just a piece of his meticulous work to exceed expectations with ‘Ayan’ that is set to hit the screen on April 3rd.

CUTE ASIN'S PIC

Rajinikanth's funny side

An A class actor who rules the masses, it's not just superstar Rajinikanth's mass image that has won him this superstar status. He is an all-rounder in acting; he started by doing villain roles, then struck gold with lead roles, and today, he is the unbeatable No. 1 actor in Kollywood. Much as we love his punch dialogues, we equally admire his sense of humour, performance and timing in his comedy sequences on screen. Let's recall a few unforgettable comic sequences in which he was in his element...

K. Balachander is the man to be credited for discovering this gem that adorns Tamil cinema. And it is in his movie Thillu Mullu that we get to experience and enjoy the humour in our superstar. The remake of the Hindi film Golmaal with Amol Palekar in the lead role, Thillu Mullu is an absolute treat and Rajni's acting is simply superb. There are a number of sequences in the movie that have you in splits. The interview scene, for instance, is full of laughs. Likewise, when Thengai Srinivasan meets Chandran's non-existent twin Indran, the meeting is quite entertaining. But the best parts are the ones with Sowkar Janaki teaming up with Rajni and trying to fool the boss. Absolutely hilarious. All of them performing with straight faces have us cracking up with laughter.

Even in his serious movies, Rajni loves to be a part of the comedy track. Take Mannan for instance; his pseudo-cool behaviour in the bus sequence with Khushbu and his comic meanderings with Koundamani are all very well done. His fans may love him for the way he reduces the baddies to pulp, but when he dumps his warrior image to play the naive guy next-door, he's bound to get you smiling, if not shaking, with laughter! He's the guy who gets shell-shocked after seeing a lady in her birthday suit, and he's also the guy who gleefully crushes the adversary who wounded his mother's feelings! We are talking about Annamalai, of course. The movie was a blockbuster, and not just because of the revenge theme; its success had a lot to do with the 'Kadavuley Kadavuley' comic sequence! Though Janagaraj was the comedian, Rajni managed pretty well for himself, as he always does.

A snake was his prop to milk comedy out of a situation in more than one film. In Annamalai, it's the snake in the ladies' hostel he supposedly chases out of the bathroom window, leading up to the famous 'Kadavuley' comedy. Again, in Pandian, there is a sequence when a snake slips into his room; Rajni goes 'Pa pa pa' and even shrieks hysterically, making incoherent sounds. With absolutely no inhibitions that he is superstar, he enacts the scene with finesse, screaming and crying like a little child. Then a snake appears in the chase sequence in Muthu, where he first boldly wields it like a whip to chase away his pursuers. But when he realizes it's a snake, not his whip, he is stunned; then it's up to Meena to help him recover his senses. There are also the fleeting moments in Padayappa where he dares to put his hand into a snake's hole and one of the onlookers from Neelambari's camp pesters him throughout the movie asking him how he did it. In Arunachalam, he uses the reptile along with a few other repulsive creatures to threaten a guy who is getting on his nerves.

In movies such as Dharmathin Thalaivan, Guru Sishyan and Rajathi Raja, he needed no help from man or animal to make us laugh, His body language and voice modulations were sufficient. He can be the macho saviour of mankind or the completely funny guy whose every movement has you laughing your head off. Other movies in which he teams up with the comedian to make us laugh are Mapillai, Veera, Ulazhaipali, Chandramukhi, Sivaji and just about every other movie he has acted in. While most of our heroes these days want to inherit Rajni's superstardom by imitating his style and punch dialogues, they should first realize that he has many, many more skills.

I am not interested in Glamour: Trisha

Trisha while speaking recently said,” I am acting in a Telugu film in which Sathyaraj is acting for the first time. Gopi Chand is the hero of this film. I will be leaving for Kerala soon to participate in the shooting of Vinnai Tandy Varuvaaya directed by Gowtham Menon.

I am donning the role of an Anglo Indian girl in the film Aadu Kalam which is being directed by Vetrimaaran. Anglo Indians from Madurai are doing the role of my parents. I have been signed for a Telugu film opposite Venkatesh.

After Abhiyum Naanum I am getting roles which have significance for acting. I prefer to act in such roles which have scope for acting. I select films which has the right proportion for glamour as well as acting. Glamour is not my prime concern.”

Ragasiya dances for Silambarasan’s song

The charming actor Silambarasan has found another fan in sex siren Ragasiya. The actress, who flew from Mumbai, is shooting for a song sung by Silambarasan for the film ‘Vaigai’. “The song is very special because it has been sung by Silambarasan,” exclaims the actress, who is dancing for this number with debutant hero of the film Bala. The song has been choreographer by Master Ashok Raja.

Ragasiya is said to have tried different dancing moves for the song too. “In fact, the song’s shoot has been strenuous with heavy movements that have left me with an ache in my legs,” the actress has added.

‘Vaigai’, directed by Sundaram Mani, is a real life story set in the backdrop of events in the 1980s in Madurai. The hero of the film, Bala, is actually the winner of the reality show ‘Maanada Mayilaada’.

Dhanush and Jai: Kollywood’s busiest stars

At a time when many actors, including leading ones, work on one film and leave their next projects undecided, two actors are enjoying a free run and making the most of their fame today: Dhanush and Jai. Both actors have six movies each in their kitty.

Dhanush has been Kollywood’s lucky kid. With a dream launch under his father’s banner, the actor has been a trendsetter of sorts, reiterating that Tamil cinema is still not an industry dominated by looks but focuses on talent. The actor, fresh from the success of 'Padikkadhavan', is working on 'Kutti' with Mitran Jawahar. The film, an adaptation of the Telugu film 'Arya', has him paired with Shriya. Besides, he is also working on 'Aadukalam', directed by Vetrimaran with Trisha as his pair.

But that’s not all. He is also signed up for brother Selvaraghavan’s next film, 'Idhu Maalai Nera Mayakkam'. Apart from these, he is also expected to do a guest role in Subramaniyam Siva’s next film, a remake of the Malayalam Prithviraj film, 'Nandanam'. The project is tentatively titled 'Un Mugam Parthene'. He has also signed up for a film 'Yogi'.

The same goes for actor Jai, who is expecting the release of 'Adhey Neram Adhey Idam'. He has also acted in Ahmed’s 'Vaamanan' and has signed up for Venkat Prabhu’s 'Goa', Moser Baer’s 'Aval Peyar Thamizharasi'. 'Arjunan Kadhali' and 'Rakkozhi' are two of his other films announced.

Endhiran Special

Peter Hein, the famous Hollywood stunt choreographer, was given a rousing welcome by the 'Endhiran' unit, including superstar Rajnikanth and director Shankar.

The applause for his never-say-die spirit, as he reported for work on time even though he was badly injured. The injuries were sustained during the shoot of the Telugu film, 'Magadheera', starring megastar Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Teja.

Peter has suffered several fractures and he was hospitalised for 20 days. As soon as he could get on to a wheel chair, he came to the sets of 'Endhiran' in Chennai, so that the schedule of the big budget movie is not disrupted.

Theeradha Villayattu Pillai

Vishal’s Theeradha Villayattu Pillai, which will be directed by Thiru, will commence very soon. However, the team is still in the process of selecting the heroines. Sources reveal that there would be three heroines in the film. While Nayathara was touted to be a strong contender for the role, it now looks like Tamanna will bag the role. It may be recalled that Tamanna went to sign up a project – Payya – after Nayan refused to star in it. The other heroine is said to be Reema Sen.

Meanwhile, there was a buzz that Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu could be signed up. But the actress is apparently not interested in south Indian films as she finds the language difficult to speak.

With Theeradha Villayattu Pillai, Tamanna’s status in Kollywood will go several notches up, industry sources say.

Ajith lends a helping hand to Jai

Ajith is known in the Kollywood circles to have a penchant for expensive toys. His latest priced possession was a helicopter that cost a few lakhs of rupees. And when his close buddy had a problem with a similar kind of helicopter during the shooting of Vamanan, Ajith chipped in to help him out.
Sources close to the Vamanan unit say that a rented toy helicopter, similar to that of Ajith’s did not function properly during the shoots. When Jai sought Ajith’s help to sort out the issue, the latter used his technical skills to set the chopper right. Ajith’s timely help is lauded not only by Jai but by the entire team.

Ravan’s twist in the tale!

It has been reported ever since Mani Ratnam’s Ravan was announced that the director's source of inspiration was from the epic Ramayana. However, the ace director has planned a twist in the tale. Apparently, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who plays the character that resembles Sita, is kidnapped by Abhishek Bachchan to avenge the humiliation of his sister.

But the twist is that Ash falls in love with Abhi during the process. It was also reported that Mani had planned some steamy scenes between Ash and Abhi but fearing action by the fundamentalists decided to do away with it.
